Futon refers a bedding system that originates from Japan. It was first introduced in America in the early 1970s. 
Futon is a convenient piece of furniture that can be used both as a sofa as well as a bed, and comprises of hundred percent cotton mattresses which can be folded and stored away. Futon proves to be an excellent choice where there is a need of space saving furniture. Even though, futons hold a reputation of being convenient and versatile, it is known not to offer full comfort. Originally, the mattresses were firm and were designed keeping its use in mind rather than luxury. Yet, modern designs have been improvised to be comfortable for both sleeping and sitting.
 
The most popular modern design of futon mattress is called super spring. It is one of the three types of mattresses that contain innersprings, which are the tempered wire coils. The thick foam used in this kind of mattress avoids the “very firm” feeling of the traditional futon mattress. In this way a pliant surface is created which gives your body shape noiselessly. The extra padding and flexibility makes it much more comfortable, especially when used as a bed. Another most fundamental type of mattress is known as the “basic coil” innerspring mattress. It lacks the extra padding and the coil wrappings; yet, it offers much more comfort than the traditional futon mattresses. Foam mattresses are another choice that uses foam padding to provide softness with the necessary adaptability.
